help nepal

All the generous initiatives aim to develop and promote a sustainable “Community Development Model” in Nepal. HELP initiates the following major activities;

  1. Placement of volunteer in creative social works
  2. Organize thematic tours and eco adventures
  3. Implement sustainable humanitarian projects

  • Economic development activities – skill and technology intervention for income generation
  • Social development activities – education, health care and social welfare
  • Environment protection activities – eco farming and eco friendly infrastructure

  1. Volunteering in creative social works

HELP offers volunteering opportunities in various community-based projects throughout Nepal. Our aim is to invite and facilitate the responsible national/international volunteers to support the community-based projects. The local communities are in the best position to determine their needs, and we provide volunteers to help them achieve their goals.

Volunteering is a great way to contribute to the community and gain experience, and also fosters personal growth. Whether you would like to take a short volunteer vacation or a prolonged gap year, we provide challenging and affordable programs.

Creative active social services through the placement of volunteers

  1. Teaching in schools:

In this program volunteers are placed in local schools to teach conversational English and reading classes to Nepali children. This will advance their practical written and verbal English language skills. In Nepal, English is becoming more and more of a required skill for job placement, educational advancement and future success. To teach English at a Nepali school you don’t need to have formal teaching qualifications. You will need a good command of written and spoken English, plenty of enthusiasm and a lot of patience. Festivals, exams, holidays and strikes disrupt the teaching schedule at various times throughout the year. We ask that volunteers in the teaching program have a second choice of program for these times. You may also like to consider teaching in an informal setting within the orphanage program where many children need additional assistance with school work.

Schools in Nepal often lack in funding and resources. Class size can range from 10 to 80 students. School runs from Sunday to Friday with Saturday off, students are between 4 and 16 years of age.

  1. Health and related services:

In Nepal, there is an average of one doctor for every 12,612 Nepalese. Because of lack of health care education, medical services and resources, Nepal leads one of the highest maternity and infant death rates in the world. Many health centers located in remote rural areas are inadequately staffed and hardly any medicines and equipments available. Most of the time there are no doctors in the hospital in rural areas.

HELP assembles health care volunteers to help alleviate this problem. This will help to boost the quality of health care for disadvantaged Nepali people. One can contribute this mission in two ways;

– Organize/join the health clinic camp in the remote villages for few days

– Work for longer time as a volunteer in the existing health institution

What can volunteers experience?

  • Volunteers gain challenging experiences during the consultations of patients in the village.
  • Volunteers get a deep insight into the modes of operation in a hospital of the remote areas.
  • Volunteers support the poorest people by providing health service and widen its perspectives and enjoy holidays.

Interested volunteers must have certification or proof of experience in a medical field, medical student ID, paramedic certification, nursing or physician’s credentials to join in this mission.

  1. Construction and conservation services:

This is an opportunity to help in a wide range of practical village-based projects. These community infrastructure maintenance and environmental protection could be as basic as painting or plastering, however, those with additional skills may be able to help in more advanced work. Projects are usually decided upon in consultation with local communities, but you can use your own wisdom to support projects as you desire. It is vital to be sensitive to the needs and wishes of the local community. Projects are usually partly funded by the communities and partly by our partner organization and/or volunteer contributions. Example projects include school repair and decoration; toilet building; drinking water projects; trail maintenance; eco-friendly recycling and  improved stove building projects etc.

Homestay accommodation with Nepalese family

This program is a fantastic way to know more about Nepal in depth. In this program you will be placed with a Nepali family in a small rural village or within a city for the duration of your stay. You should remember that this is a cultural exchange, so you should try and offer some knowledge of your own home culture and customs to your host family. 1. Thematic tour and eco adventure

Nepal is one of the world’s leading trekking destinations, attracting thousands of foreign tourists each year. However, very few rural people benefit from this business. Uncontrolled tourism has damaged the environment and induced unwanted social change along Nepal’s most popular trekking routes. Community tourism is a group activity managed by the active participation of local community people who host tourists in their community and benefit are share among villages and individuals as much as possible.  Its main goal is to attract tourists to rural areas and use the revenue for local development. Not only the communities benefit from community tourism, however the tourists benefit as well. They get the opportunity to share and experience the traditional lifestyle of village people from all sectors of Nepali culture. It enhances inter-cultural relationships while offering economic development to the disadvantaged in remote village areas.  In addition simply interesting, discussing and experiencing different cultures, forming friendships, and sharing experiences and wealth promotes peace and helps create a sense of a global family.

How community tours are organized?

Community Tours are organized in coordination with a local community organization. Several communities that are socially and ecologically friendly are chosen as tourism villages through the active participation if community members. Different ethnic groups of people having natural and cultural beauties attract tourists in the villages. Tourists are received with warm hospitality in traditional manner and invited to stay in home of one of the family. Accommodation is simple with basic facilities. Locally prepared food is served according to the native culture that you will be eating as a family member. Community will entertain with traditional dance and music and normally they offer requests to join them.

Local attractions both scenic and cultural are shown by guides who always do their best to make guests stay a lifetime memorable. You can have first hand experience of village peoples daily life like how people survive on growing food on hill terraces, how ox/buffalo plough the fields, how a women spends her time early morning to late night and many more…… that you can never find of your own. Although no longer so remote, Nepal’s natural beauty continues to attract travelers all over the world, who comes to experience for them Nepal’s uniqueness as a trekking destination. The prime attraction of trekking is the Himalayan ranges. Of the 14 peaks in the world above 8000 meters, 8 are in Nepal and beneath the backdrop of these majestic peaks lie Nepal’s hill country where most of the major trekking routes are located. Similarly the cultural scenery that represents the many ethnic groups in these trekking routes and the fact that the natural beauty, still untouched by modern civilization are still isolated from the few roads that Nepal has, trekking in Nepal has further increased its popularity.

Nepalese handicrafts are famous all over the world because of its uniqueness. Community people living in the villages and countryside are rich in traditional handicrafts producing skill and the indigenous knowledge. Because of the remoteness and lack of appropriate marketing skills, people are not able to get significant benefit and promote it in a professional way. We support the community people by selling or promoting their handicraft products nationally and internationally.

Looking at the present market demand and the existing skills of the community people; woolen and cotton hand woven materials like cap, hat, gloves, scarf, bags etc, Nepali handmade paper products like greeting cards, paper bags, envelopes, calendar etc and wooden and/or bamboo products (though these are fragile) are the typical handicrafts producing in the village.
